Tuttle's Exhibition Inspires

July 15, 2005

Summer program students visited the current exhibition at the SF MOMA this month to see the art of Richard Tuttle. Blurring the boundaries of mediums from painting, drawing, to sculpture, Tuttle brings unique and diverse style into his installations, books, and 3D objects. His maverick approach to utilizing materials defies categorization as his work exhibits creative independence at work. The playful characters of the art pieces provide much inspiration for students in Olivet's design college. We asked student Sunju Jin, a sophomore Graphic Designer, what she thought about Tuttle's work.

"His style is so simple and can fall into today's current design. He encourages experimentation and shows the reward of expanding the use of materials in building his art. After looking at his exhibition, it makes me want to go home and start designing."

With over 300 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, the exhibit covers Tuttle's 40-year career of poetry, joy, art, and use of materials. He began organically and built up from there in producing the final products on exhibit. His style is unique and has been profoundly influential to a younger generation of artists, including ones at Olivet Art and Design.
