Martin Luther King Jr. Day Message - Olivet University

January 19, 2015

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Standing outside of my church leaving Sunday Service with my family, I looked up and read these words on the signboard at the entrance.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, like his life, continue to inspire me and people everywhere because they so clearly point to the true love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God’s one and only Son Jesus Christ came into our world full of the darkness of sin to save sinners from sure death. In fact, while we were still sinners, Jesus Christ died for us (Romans 5:8)!

By taking the punishment that our sins deserved upon himself even though he was sinless, Jesus Christ revealed God’s love to us perfectly, and freed forever from the power of sin and death all of those who believe in his name (Isaiah 53:12, Romans 8:2).

The darkness of sin is still over much of our hurting world. We at Olivet are called with believers in Jesus Christ everywhere to share the Good News of the salvation that only comes through Jesus Christ.

This Martin Luther King Day I pray that our hearts would accept the truth and love of Jesus Christ by faith, so we could drive out the darkness of sin and hatred wherever God calls us.

And may we remember with gratitude Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for all he did to model the life of Jesus Christ, the source of our strength and courage to love.
