Olivet School of Art & Design opened a Drawing Fundamentals class that immediately attracted many students this quarter. The popular class at Olivet University's Riverside campus is aimed at giving students the proper foundation for creating beautiful artwork.
Instructor and OSAD Director Zimou Tan set up two separate classes on two different days in order to accommodate the high enrollment number. During the first lesson last week, Tan emphasized the importance of basic fundamentals and drawing structure, such as how to view an object and analyze its compositions.
Learning how to see and think of an object is more important than directly drawing on paper without any analysis, said Tan.
Some of the other fundamentals students learned included the four basic figures of circle, triangle, square and trapezoid to draw 2D images; the figures of sphere, cone, cube and cylinder to draw 3D images; and the concept of ellipses in perspective.
In the weeks ahead, Tan will teach about proportion and how to use shadow to make subjects to approximate reality, among other basics. After 10 weeks, students will begin to create their own drawings.
