In order to improve the English reading, listening and speaking skills, the Olivet School of Language Education (OSLE) at Olivet University (OU) main campus recently started a reading program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

Currently, the ESL students are divided into two groups based on their English level: Level 4 that focuses on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and Level 2 that focuses on basic English-learning ability.

Level 4 students listen to online sermons or Christian seminars while reading the corresponding transcripts. They also practice on past TOEFL exam papers to familiarize themselves with various types of test questions.

Level 2 students primarily listen to audio Bible readings and then read aloud the Bible themselves to check for pronunciation and improve their speed of reading. This exercise is performed daily by gathering in groups after their class hours. After a few practice sessions, students began to see the improving effects of reading in their day-to-day life.

“The reading program is quite effective and beneficial for not just speaking but also listening. When I began reading aloud, my listening skill also improved at the same time,” Level 2 student Abela Dang said.

Class instructor Eric Rosales keeps finding different materials for students to practice and improve their English. Encouraged by the passion of the students, Rosales plans to design more targeted exercises in the future that promote engagement and real-life practice methods.
